Ventenata (Ventenata dubia) Response to Grazing and Prescribed Fire on the Pacific Northwest Bunchgrass Prairie

چکیده

The exotic annual grass ventenata (Ventenata dubia L.) is raising concern as it rapidly invades multiple ecosystem types within the United States, including sagebrush steppe, ponderosa pine forests, woodlands, and much of Palouse Pacific Northwest Bunchgrass Prairie (PNB). Despite increasing attention, little known about invasion dynamics ventenata, especially its response to disturbances such grazing fire. In this study, we examined how cattle prescribed fire affect abundance (standing crop, cover, frequency, density) other plant groups on PNB over time using two separate long-term studies established in 2004. first study (Cattle Grazing) looked at 14-yr effect exclusion aboveground biomass cover. Our second (Grazing Prescribed Fire) main interactive effects three sampling periods (2008, 2016, 2018). We documented a 30% increase cover 55% frequency past 15 yr, areas that were not disturbed by or grazing. found only weak evidence increased standing crop when compared with cattle-excluded paddocks, something could be related timing use. There was no burning impacted own. However, some interactions between suggests help reduce grazed livestock. These reinforce important differences invasive winter annuals grasslands clarify need for research focuses primarily relatively new species many ecosystems now inhabits.

Prescribed fire and grazing effects on carbon dynamics in a northern mixed-grass prairie

Rangelands are complex systems that occupymore than 50% of the land area in theworld. Carbon cycling on rangelands is generally understood, but details concerning agricultural management practices of prescribed fire and grazing are not well defined. Field experiments were conducted on northern mixedgrass prairie in eastern Montana with undisturbed, burned, and grazed treatments established in 2...

Response of Deeproot Sedge (Cyperus entrerianus) to Herbicide and Prescribed Fire in Texas Coastal Prairie

Introduced accidentally from South America, deeproot sedge is rapidly expanding in a variety of habitats throughout the southeastern United States. Of particular concern is its rapid expansion, naturalization, and formation of monocultures in Texas coastal prairie, one of the most imperiled temperate ecoregions in North America. The objective of this research was to examine how deeproot sedge r...

Variation in Grasshopper (Acrididae) Densities in Response to Fire Frequency and Bison Grazing in Tallgrass Prairie

While weather can contribute signiÞcantly to grasshopper population dynamics in North American grasslands, local environmental conditions resulting from land use practices may be equally important. In this study, signiÞcant differences in grasshopper density were detected among adjacent watersheds from Kansas Flint Hills tallgrass prairie that differed in Þre frequency and especially bison graz...

Remnant and Restored Prairie Response to Fire, Fertilization, and Atrazine

The effect of spring burning, fertilization, and atrazine on herbage yield of warmand cool-season grasses, flowering stalk density, and seed yield of selected warm-season grasses was determined on a remnant prairie and a restored prairie located near Lincoln and Center, Nebraska, respectively. Sites were burned in mid-April 1987 and followed by application of fertilizer (112 kg N/ha at the remn...
